[Article] How to Increase Team Performance with Data Oriented Management?

In order to reach your organization’s strategic objectives effectively, it is crucial to measure and adjust your team’s performance metrics. This is the key in determining whether your employees are devoting their time and effort to what really matters.

Correct data analysis allows you to find possible issues and fix them early. For example, in a factory working with three shifts, a small change between low performing night shift and the day shift workers might positively affect production volume and quality.

Let’s look at points to consider when managing team performance:

Find and analyze the correct KPIs: Make sure you are focusing on the correct metrics when analyzing the performance of your employees. Let’s examine two craft supervisors working on the same machine in a production company. Let’s again assume they do work on the same product for the same amount of time. And let’s say we have the electricity consumption for the process for both supervisors. What to do if one of the supervisors seems to consume more electricity, all the while producing less?
  1. Is the machine recording the data correctly?
  2. Is there an electric leakage?
  3. Is the supervisor working properly?
Answers to all these three questions are equally important. In this scenario, if one of the supervisors is not shutting down the machine on his breaks, you can easily see how much of an impact that would have on the company using data analysis. The issue here can be solved with training or warning mechanisms.

Set the right objectives: With data-based decision, you can communicate to your teams the objectives that they should target. Setting impossibly high goals or very low objectives might reduce the motivation of your employees. For this reason, you should set reachable goals and, at the same time, goals that would push your employees to do better. Analyze where your employees get stuck or achieve success on a day, month, year and even real time basis; make future plans based on real time data. Compare your employees based on gender, region, product, age, and plan according to these metrics to increase performance.

Reward your employees using the right data: To motivate team members, you must employ a reward system. Reward employee of the month, employee of the year, best selling or operation employee using data, and get them motivated based on facts. Employees who see their own data in an understandable interface might even enter into a competitive spirit just by themselves.

As a result: Using correct data not only helps you manage your team performance, but also communicate your objectives in a clear and concise manner to your employees. You can efficiently position your employees and increase work motivation.
